Jeep Grand Cherokee gets top industry 4x4 award

Article by Christian Andrei, on December 21, 2011

The Jeep Grand Cherokee scooped the 4x4 of the Year award from Total 4x4 magazine -- a top industry honor for the award-winning luxury off-roader. With at least 30 global awards from a range of opinion-leading organizations, the new four-wheel drive is one of the most awarded SUVs ever. With an impressive features list and more refinement than before, it is no surprise that the Grand Cherokee is top choice again.

The judging panel of Total 4x4 praised the vehicle's technology, comfort and equipment. It also gave special mention to the vehicle's practicality.

Editor Alan Kidd commented that the vehicle is "good value by the standards of its competitors," adding that "there's little at this price" that performs "such a good job" of integrating equipment, comfort, relevant technology and dynamic prowess. Through the years, four Grand Cherokees are made and each "has improved on the last," according to Kidd. He further described it to be a “very worthy winner.”

In addition, the Grand Cherokee took the Awards' Off-Roader category. Nigel Land, brand director of Jeep Chrysler UK, said that they are proud of Grand Cherokee's achievement this year, adding that they look forward to "more great things from the brand in 2012."

The price of the Jeep Grand Cherokee lineup begins at £36,795 for the 3.0 V6 CRD Limited. Meanwhile, the 3.0 V6 CRD Overland has a price tag of £43,995.

Exterior Design

The 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee boasts a new surface that promotes aerodynamics. It boasts fuel efficiency and fluid design, along with an improved drag. Furthermore, it has a drag coefficient of 0.37, while the 2009 Grand Cherokee has a Cd of 0.404.

Ralph Gilles, Senior Vice President for Product Design at Chrysler Group LLC, says that the all-new Jeep Grand Cherokee is much sportier and much more refined and focused compared to its predecessor. According to him, the 2011 model carries the Jeep Grand Cherokee’s classic style but with refinements to its sculpted athletic exterior.

Moreover, the new Jeep Grand Cherokee’s front still has Jeep’s distinctive seven-slot grille, trapezoid-shaped wheel arches, and round headlamps. Removable lower front fascia facilitates better fuel economy, off-road capability, and on-road performance. The lower front fascia for both the Limited and Overland models has a large chromed appliqué that highlights available tow hooks.

Additionally, the Jeep Grand Cherokee has a sleek, sporty, and muscular profile. It has black appliqués on its B-pillars, giving its day-light opening an aerodynamic and modern look. Chromed door handles and chromed mirrors are available and these complement the day-light opening surround on all models. For improved off-road capability, the car also comes with standard 17-inch wheels. However, 18-inch or 20-inch wheels are also available.

What’s more, the car’s taillamps are installed from the rear quarter panel all the way to the back, creating a solid form and an upscale appearance. The treatment complements the design for the front-end and resonates all throughout the rest of the car’s exterior.

All Jeep Grand Cherokee models that are equipped with a HEMI V-8 engine have 3.5” dual chromed exhaust tips, and those with a Pentastar V-6 engine have a 3” single exhaust.
