Volkswagen Group of America has appointed Joerg Sommer as vice president of product marketing and strategy, effective September 1, 2013. Sommer will replace Rainer Michel, who is returning to Germany to take a still-unknown engineering role within Volkswagen Group.
Sommer was previously chief of electric mobility sales and marketing for Volkswagen Group, making him suitable for the post as head of product strategy for the VW brand as the carmaker gets ready to introduce plug-in vehicle in the United States for the first time.
He also held a similar role at Renault. Sommer has also worked for the former DaimlerChrysler and for Adam Opel AG, the German subsidiary of General Motors. As head of product strategy for the VW brand, Sommer will be responsible for overseeing strategy for powertrains, connectivity and electric vehicles as well as pricing in the United States.
Jonathan Browning, chief executive of Volkswagen Group of America, said in a statement that Sommer brings “extensive experience, technical background, and enthusiasm” for the brand as they get ready for the “next phase of growth."
Sommer’s expertise in EVs will be useful in the lead-up to the rollout of the VW e-Golf in the US in 2014. A plug-in hybrid version of the Golf will follow the all-electric e-Golf in the next few years. [source: Vw]
