When eBay closed its bidding last Sunday for a Volkswagen Golf that had been owned by Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton, the bids had reached nearly $75,000. In the last 10 days, five bidders were actively trying to top everyone else’s bids for the 10-year-old car. But about 10 minutes before the auction closed, a bid came in for 48,100 pounds (around $74,500 Canadian).
A brand new VW Golf has a price tag of about $24,000. Meanwhile, a 10-year-old Golf has a book value of about $5,700.
But then, the highest eBay bid still didn’t meet the hidden reserve bid and so, the car will stay in the owner’s garage. Sonny Brazil told the Newbury Today newspaper that at this point, the vehicle remains available but there’s now no rush to sell it right away.
He was “pleasantly surprised” though for the attention and bids seen on eBay. Collectors want this used car because it comes with a document that proves that Kate Middleton had owned it. She purchased the car in 2001 when she still studied at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland.
Of course, this is where she and Prince William met and stared dating. Kate drove this particular vehicle for about 100,000 kilometers before she passed this car to her brother James in 2007.
Just a few short years later, the car went to a local car dealership in Berkshire. This was how the car ended up with Sonny Brazil, the 21-year-old son of the dealer owner. Brazil was surprised by who were its previous owners and he thought that it “might be a nice piece of history.”
