Kia Motors America is recalling 145,755 vehicles to repair a defect on the driver's side airbag that may prevent it from deploying. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Web site safercar.gov presented documents that reveal that this recall covers 2006-08 model Optimas and 2007-08 model Rondos.
The problem stems from the clock spring assembly in the driver's side airbag that could get damaged in time.
This damage places high resistance on the electrical circuit and prompts an airbag warning light to illuminate on the instrument panel, compromising the ability of the airbag to deploy, Kia said in a letter to the agency.
This exposes drivers to the risk of injury. Kia recognized the problem last November. Dealers and customers will be notified in March.
Kia released a statement to let the public know that it doesn’t know of any incidents wherein airbags failed to deploy or of injuries that result from the defect.
Kia said that a lifetime warranty will be provided for the driver’s airbag clock spring contact assembly for vehicles named in this recall. The airbag clock spring will be replaced by dealers as necessary, free of charge.
Kia Motors America revealed that the new mid-size 2006.5 Kia Optima sedan marks the latest update in the company’s goal of reviving the line-up started three years ago. Having a unique style of its own, this new model has a number of changes including having a wider track, longer wheelbase, increased horsepower, enhanced driving dynamics, and improved fuel economy.
All of these were done in order to improve not only performance but passenger comfort as well. Indeed, the new Optima is the newest addition to the range of new products being introduced by Kia Motors. Over the last three years, the company has been expanding its product offerings to showcase new ones like the Amanti large premium sedan, the Rio and Rio5 for the subcompact class, Sedona minivan, Sorento mid-size SUV, the 5-door Spectra5, and the Sportage compact SUV.
For the new 2006.5 Optima, the wider track and longer wheelbase allow for interior volume at 104.2 cubic feet, larger when compared to other mid-size sedans and even segment leaders in the likes of the Nissan Altima 1, Toyota Camry, and Honda Accord. With the new Optima, Kia is showing as well that it remains committed when it comes to delivering the highest levels when it comes to standard safety equipment.
Thus, to name a few, the new model comes with 6 airbags as standard and even has on the side-curtain full-length airbags. According to Len Hunt, who is COO and executive vice president of Kia Motors America, Inc., the 2006.5 Optima is one prime example of the company’s talent when it comes to offering vehicles that are not only fun-to-drive and stylish but also bring with them a high level of safety, convenience, and comfort, and all at a reasonable price.
When the first Optima was released, Hunt continued, it became the segment’s value leader. By putting in important enhancements on the handling and performance as well as offering ample amount of passenger space, Hunt added, it is sure to attract new buyers to the brand. The new 2006.5 Optima was unveiled by Kia Motors during the North American International Auto Show held in January 2006.
