Lamborghini will soon consider China as its biggest market

Article by Christian Andrei, on May 1, 2011

As the luxury market in China continues to thrive, it becomes more likely that Lamborghini will soon consider China as its biggest market, according to chief executive Stephan Winkelmann’s interview with Reuters.

Winkelmann said that its precise sales numbers in China will rely on the number of new Aventador luxury sports cars that is produced. He said that first quarter sales exceeded the figure posted in the same period in 2010.

Notably, Lamborghini only had the Gallardo available in the past quarter. However, the Murcielago, which ended its offering in May 2010, had been available in the first quarter of 2010.

Winkelmann said that by the end of 2011, Lamborghini will have about 20 dealerships in China. Currently, it has 14 dealers in the country. Winkelmann pointed out that the China market is different since it has more female customers and more younger people.

He looked at these factors as a good sign, stating that getting old with the cars makes it more likely that these fans will remain loyal with the company. Winkelmann was interviewed during the unveiling of the new Gallardo LP 550-2 Tricolore, a special edition version that’s meant to commemorate 150 years of Italian unification.

As the heir-apparent of what is considered as the most successful Lamborghini model, the new Gallardo LP560-4 allows the company to set the bar higher for super sports cars. Its revolutionary design that reinterprets Lamborghini’s classic lines is greatly complemented by a higher level of dynamics and performance courtesy of a new engine, new suspension and permanent four-wheel drive transmission.

Since Lamborghini launched the Gallardo in 2003, it has already sold around 7,100 examples. Stephan Winkelmann, president and chief executive of Automobili Lamborghini, remarked that the new LP560-4 will consolidate the Gallardo’s success story, adding that it would surpass the previous model in all elements, including dynamics and design.

He quipped that the carmaker would be able to continue its growth strategy with the launch of the Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4. Serving as the core of the new Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4 is a new 5.2-liter V10 engine that could eke out 560 PS (412 kW) at 8000 rpm, or 40 PS more than the powerhouse that ran the previous model. Since it is also around 20 kg lighter, the power-to-weight ratio has been improved to 2.5 kilograms per PS (hp), which means better performance.

In fact, the new Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4 could accelerate from nil to 100 km/h in just 3.7 seconds, reach 200 km/h in speed in 11.8 seconds, and achieve a top speed of 325 km/h. What is more astonishing is the fact that while this latest Gallardo model is more powerful, it consumes 18 percent less fuel and emits 18 percent less carbon dioxide, thanks to its engine’s direct fuel injection system "Iniezione Diretta Stratificata."

Aside from improving the Gallardo’s power, emissions and efficiency, Lamborghini’s engineers at its Technical Department in Sant'Agata also worked to further enhance the super sports car’s handling, traction and stability at high speeds. Of course, the improvements didn’t stop there. The new Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4 also features a redesigned four-wheel drive transmission and a new suspension as well as optimized aerodynamics, lighter weight and reduced friction between the components.

With all these elements perfectly complementing each other, the new Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4 could prove itself as a true road-going super sports car that could compete on the tracks and be taken on long trips. Lamborghini vehicles have always been known to be high performing, highly efficient and superbly elegant road machines. This brand DNA has been well conveyed through the models that super sports car maker has created, using purist strength as the core.

Every new Lamborghini should carry this DNA, and the new Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4 is no exception. In its purist form, the Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4 apparently bears no additional stylish elements, and only boasts of having precise lines and clean surface edges. As it is, the form of the Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4 is shaped by function.

For instance, the vehicle’s front has been designed so the Gallardo LP560-4 would seemingly hug the ground, resulting to higher aerodynamic efficiency. Moreover, the Gallardo LP560-4 features larger and accentuated cooling intakes to supply enough air to cool down its more powerful engine. Also, the Gallardo LP560-4 located a spoiler low between the air intakes for improved aerodynamic equilibrium even at high speeds.
