Mercedes-Benz released the first photos with the all-new GLA Concept, a vehicle that will make its official debut this Saturday at the Auto Shanghai 2013. As expected, the new GLA Concept previews Mercedes-Benz’ upcoming crossover which will be revealed in September at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show.
As you can see from the photos, the new concept is based on the smaller A-Class and the design is inspired by the small hatch.
Under the hood, there is a 2.0-liter engine borrowed from the A250 delivering 2011 hp and bolted to a 7G-DCT dual-clutch automatic gearbox that sends the power to the 4MATIC all-wheel drive system.
For those who don’t know, Mercedes-Benz is also working on the GLA 45 AMG that will be powered by the 2.0-liter turbocharged engine, found on the A45 AMG and the CLA 45 AMG, delivering 360 hp and 450 Nm of torque.
While people say not to judge a book by its cover, the exterior looks of the vehicle may convey how poised it is in terms of overall performance. That is certainly true for the Mercedes-Benz GLA concept, which has unique features and styling while exuding confidence with its power and elegance.
Starting with the front, the Concept GLA dons a dynamic bonnet with the so-called powerdomes. It also features a sporty radiator grille with a star on the center. The styling surrounds the star and then merges into two horizontal bars. Added features on the front are the so-called "softcubes,” which are soft, raised pads that help define further the radiator grille.
These softcubes can also be found on the side sill panels and alongside the exhaust tailpipes. For a more dynamic look, the Concept GLA features unique door mirrors with twin supporting struts. The mirrors are also fitted with a protective grille for a typical SUV look.
Meanwhile, the sides of the Concept GLA feature a "dropping line" that extends from the headlamp to the rear wheel arch. The sides also feature a beltline trim that rises slightly from the rear door towards the C-pillar. These features blend with the contour formed by the curvature of the vehicle flank and the line rising from the level of the door sill towards the dropping line.
Interestingly, the slim door handles of the Concept GLA are now fully sunk, but could be raised just with a touch of a button. For a more coupe-like profile, the Concept GLA is installed with frameless side windows.
Completing the exterior looks of the Mercedes Concept GLA are its unique 20-inch wheels that features a distinguishing five-spoke turbine design. The concept’s 255/45 R 20 tires have been specially created for the model and feature a tread pattern that continues the lines of the spokes. Lastly, the Mercedes Concept GLA comes with a silver Alubeam paint finish.
