The special edition Mazda Roadster BLACK TUNED is now available at all Mazda and Mazda Anfini dealerships throughout Japan. Known abroad as the Mazda MX-5, this special edition Roadster is offered with three external body colors, including two exclusive colors (Spirited Green Metallic and Velocity Red Mica) as well as the Crystal White Pearl Mica.
The Mazda Roadster, a legendary lightweight, two-seat, open-top sports car, was launched originally in 1989. It is available in about 60 countries and it has a total production of more than 900,000 units.
The Guinness World Records refers to this vehicle as the world's "best selling two-seater sports car.” Based on the premium 'RS RHT' and 'VS RHT' model grades, the special edition BLACK TUNED Roadster comes with Mazda's revolutionary power retractable hard top (RHT).
Its styling features include a Brilliant Black roof and door mirrors and a set of Gun Metallic 17-inch alloy wheels. The quality of its interior was improved, with the seats and steering wheel wrapped in black leather with sand-colored stitching.

For 2009, Mazda will be commemorating the MX-5’s 20th anniversary. This model has been recognized by none other than the Guinness Book of World Records as the top-selling two-seater sports car with 850,000 units sold. The reality is that since the MX-5 was first released in 1989 and up to November 2008, a total of 855,000 units have been sold with Europe sales at 254,000. Over a span of two decades, the MX-5 has received 178 major automotive awards with the third-generation bringing 58 awards.
These include Roadster of the Year by Gear Magazine in 2005 and the Japan Car of the Year for 2005-2006. When it comes to delivering the best in roadster driving, nothing comes close to the MX-5. Since the first model was very successful, Mazda never felt the need to change. Thus even the new generations are lightweight, has the classic roadster design, inexpensive to buy, cost effective to use, and has the Jinba Ittai one-with-the-car handling.
It was in 2005 when Mazda released the third-generation of the MX-5 using the strict gram strategy. What this entailed was to make the weight remain the same even as the body was stiffer and more equipment was fitted. By 2006, the MX-5 Roadster Coupe was launched. It continued to have the roadster style but this time it was fitted with a power-retractable hard top.
Even with the folding mechanism, the hard top is at 37 kilograms which means that the ideal weight distribution of 50:50 is retained. Since it takes up no extra space, boot volume is at 150 liters, the same as that of the soft top version.
Because of this, customers can now choose between two open-top and agile sports cars. For this year, the brand will be launching a redesigned version of the MX-5’s third-generation. It will continue to have the same improvements and thus entice more people to own this pure roadster.
