This is the McLaren X-1, a one-off concept built by the British manufacturer, which will make its world debut at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. Although it appears that the car has plenty of elements borrowed from the McLaren MP4-12C, the company says that, externally, only the glasshouse is carried over from the 12C.
Regarding its dimensions, the McLaren X-1 is 4658mm long – 109mm longer than a 12C, it has a width of 2097mm (with mirrors) – an increase of 188 mm and a height of 1199mm. Kerb weight is almost identical to the MP4-12C, about 1400kg.
As expected, because it is a one-off model, all the components were tooled exclusively for the car and include head- and taillights inspired by the McLaren Speed Marque logo.
MSO has applied its expertise on its most ambitious project to date, the McLaren X-1. A brand-new body constructed from cutting-edge materials, holds completely bespoke components, including lights and wheels. This required new tests and certifications, so it took over two years to produce – a process beginning from even before the style was approved.
Because it was never meant to be a concept car that would never touch tarmac, the X-1 required a unique development programme, so that it would be a vehicle that could be used immediately. It needed to be road legal but able to reach supercar speeds, while still comfortably seating two adults. So, even though the 12C was already as compact a package as possible, the MonoCell’s inspired flexibility meant a fully new form could be created while still preserving McLaren engineering integrity.
A complete Computational Fluid Dynamics testing regime confirmed high-speed steadiness, and the car also finished testing over about 625 miles, including two intensive sessions at Spain’s Idiada circuit with McLaren’s chief test driver, Chris Goodwin. After all that testing, the entire car was methodically rebuilt by hand to exhibition standards.
