Mercedes-Benz has finally unveiled the all-new S-Class and as expected the new flagship sedan will replace not one, but two different model lines, including the Maybach brand that was previously axed. Dubbed W222, the 2014 S-Class is evolutionary and as expected it is a big step ahead for Mercedes-Benz comparing it with the outgoing model.
The design is quite impressive and the new S-Class comes with a new traditional grille with added chrome, larger headlamps that use up to 56 individual LEDs, a more contoured bonnet and a beautiful front bumper. The rear end has also been redesigned and we must admit that it looks much better than the outgoing model.
Just like any other S-Class model, the 2014MY S-Class introduces new safety features such as illuminated belt buckle extender but also airbags within the belt straps for the rear passengers, and an airbag within the seat cushion. Apparently, Mercedes-Benz focused on improving the rear-seat luxury as it has to impress the Asian market.
The interior noise has also been reduced as the W222 S-Class features structural and suspension components that reduce noise and vibration. The long wheelbase version uses the same wheelbase as its predecessor (3165 mm).
The 2014 S-Class is 21 mm longer, 29 mm wider and 11 mm higher than its predecessor as it is 5246 mm long, 1899 mm wide and has a height of 1491 mm. The boot space was reduced by 30 litres at 530 litres due to the introduction of new rear seats that offer an optional reclining function.
Regarding the safety systems, the Magic Body Control (MBC) is maybe the most interesting one as it uses cameras mounted within the windscreen in order to scan the road and detect irregularities before automatically adjusting the dampers and improve ride comfort.
The Thermotronic climate control is also interesting as this system can filter out dust, spores and viruses. Comfort Package allows the seats to mimic a hot-stone massage. Moreover, the new S-Class features adaptive cruise control, a 24-speaker sound system, built-in atomizer or night vision.
