Bernd Schneider, record DTM champion and AMG brand ambassador, has immersed himself personally into the project, and even had the privilege – along with an AMG engine fitter -- of installing the powerful AMG 6.3-liter V8 engine in the SLS AMG GT3 45th Anniversary, which is basically a race edition of Mercedes-AMG’s Gullwing.
This ultra-exclusive customer sport racer is a personalization of the brand’s triumphant AMG Customer Sports Program that has already earned 32 wins in the 2012 Motor Sports Season. The program has already won three driver and team titles in the FIA GT3 European Championship, the ADAC GT Masters and the FIA GT1 World Championship.
To distinguish the SLS AMG GT3 45th Anniversary edition from a typical SLS AMG GT3, AMG had implemented an array of exterior and interior modifications. For instance, AMG wrapped the body of the SLS AMG GT3 45th Anniversary in the new designo magno graphite matt paint finish. This exclusive paintwork was only available on the SL65 AMG 45th Anniversary, which was unfurled at the New York International Auto Show in April 2012 also to Mercedes-AMG’s commemorate AMG’s 45th birthday. Now, this paintwork has found its way on the special race version of the Gullwing, as complemented by AMG light-alloy wheels in designo magno graphite.
Also distinguishing the SLS AMG GT3 45th Anniversary edition from a typical SLS AMG GT3 is the "45 Years of Driving Performance" logo – as framed in silver – on its gullwing doors. This exclusive logo entices spectators to inspect the 45th Anniversary edition closer, leading them to marvel at the gullwing doors’ exposed carbon-fiber structure. In fact, the doors are not the only components made from carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP), a lightweight yet strong material usually used in motorsports. Also made from CFRP are components like the bonnet, boot lid, mudguards and rear wings, so are its front and rear apron as well as front splitter and rear diffuser.
Inside, the new Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3 45th Anniversary reveals a cabin that is special enough even for a functional racing car. For instance, its steel roll-over cage is also finished in matt "designo magno graphite" while its dashboard and center console are wrapped in a matt carbon-fiber finish. These finishes are contrasted by the six-point seat belts and a silver steering wheel. The cabin of the new Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3 45th Anniversary edition also features a co-driver's seat shell in a high-strength carbon-fiber safety cell. To mark the exclusivity of the five examples of the SLS AMG GT3 45th Anniversary, the seats and the center console don a special badge with a "1 of 5" logo. Likewise, a high-quality AMG indoor car cover is included with the special edition, also donning the "45 Years of Driving Performance" logo.
