Mercedes-Benz likes smartwatches, inks strategic partnership with Pebble Technology

Mercedes-Benz has signed a strategic partnership with Pebble Technology as it gears up for the 2014 International Consumer Electronics Show. The partnership provides Mercedes access to some of Pebble's newest hardware as well as early releases of application programming interfaces (APIs). These technologies would allow the carmaker to develop integrated applications for future in-vehicle use cases.

Mercedes will show how an intelligently networked vehicle can be a part of the "Internet of things" and its benefits for the customer. As a proof of concept, the developers at Mercedes reinvented the Digital DriveStyle app to allow it to communicate with Pebble smart watches, which could act as "second screens" for smartphone.

This wearable device unlocks some features for a connected car. For instance, Mercedes drivers can take a look at some important vehicle information like fuel level, door-lock status, and vehicle location using their Pebble smart watch, even when they are outside or away from the vehicle.

After getting inside a Mercedes car, the Pebble smart watch app transforms, alerting its driver to real-time hazards through V2V technology like accidents, road construction, or stalled vehicles by vibrating the watch. 

Likewise, users pairing their Pebble smart watch can customize the three watch buttons to activate their selected Digital DriveStyle features like reporting hazards, auto-routing, Siri activation, remote-controlling media, or showing of nearby traffic conditions. [source: Mercedes-Benz]
