Mini will use Goodwood name for luxury flagship brand

Article by Christian A., on April 30, 2011

If sources are to be believed, Mini’s flagship brand for high-end, customer-specified luxury versions would have the Goodwood name. At the recently held Shanghai auto show, the very luxurious ‘Mini Inspired by Goodwood’ was displayed. The fact that it was introduced in China highlights the significance of this market.

The Goodwood badge will likely appear on other luxurious Minis similar to how the John Cooper Works badge is representative of its high-performance models.

Sources inside BMW said that the Goodwood will have a limited run of only 1,000 and will start selling in spring 2012. In mainland Europe, it will sell for 47,000 euro or about £42,000. Those who buy the Goodwood can choose from Rolls’ Diamond Black metallic or Mini’s Reef Blue metallic.

Instead of getting individual numbers, the cars will have a console plaque that may say ‘One of 1000’, ‘Two of 1000’, and so forth. Mini collaborated closely with the Rolls design team at the Goodwood factory to come up with a product that demonstrates the “typical British understatement.”

For the Goodwood interior, Rolls-Royce designer Alan Sheppard used materials and suppliers that were used on Rolls’ own cars. Rolls Cornsilk leather was used on the entire dashboard, centre console and seats while the dash’s wood veneers are from Rolls.

The instruments feature the Rolls-Royce typeface. The Goodwood is powered by the 1.6-litre, twin-scroll turbocharged, 181bhp Cooper S engine and is coupled with either a six-speed manual or a six-speed auto ’box. Included as standard equipment are the adaptive xenon lights and a Harman Kardon hi-fi.

MINI INSPIRED BY GOODWOOD features top-grade materials, and the best possible workmanship and stylish dominance. Its unique character is brought about by an excellent collaboration. The 3-door mini special edition was made under the direction of the designer team of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars and applies the distinct style of the British luxury car manufacturer in the premium small car segment.

The identically distinct features of the interior and exterior were conceptualized at the Rolls-Royce Design design division in Goodwood, the southern English town and provide a captivating charm and considerably high-quality atmosphere.

The MINI INSPIRED BY GOODWOOD comes with a corresponding color concept, production quality with accurate craftsmanship and carefully chosen materials that ensure the highest level of comfort and well-being. The dashboard as well as the central instrument surrounds plus air vents, carpet surfaces, roof lining, centre console, Lounge leather seats plus the side, door and body pillar exterior finish boast of the distinctive Rolls-Royce color Cornsilk.

Both doorhandles and dashboard are made in Goodwood with a Walnut Burr finish, another Rolls-Royce exclusive. Meanwhile, the dashboard top is made of black-nappa leather and the door linings are tipped with leather while multifunction steering wheel buttons come with Piano Black surface finishes to achieve that premium feel.

Furthermore, the car takes pride in its Cashmere roof linings, rear storage tray and sun visors plus floor mats with deep-pile lambswool quality. Exterior design features that are most striking are the 17-inch light alloy with multi-spoke design and Rolls-Royce’s exclusive Diamond Black metallic finish of the body.
