After we received some news today regarding the Geneva Motor Show debut of the new Cayenne Diesel, Porsche also released more details of its upcoming Porsche Cayenne S Hybrid.
The new vehicle is powered by a supercharged Audi 3.0-liter V6 engine with Direct Fuel Injection (DFI) capable to deliver 333 hp and 324 lb-ft of torque from 2,900 to 5,300, rpm but also a 52 hp three-phase synchronous electric motor that produces up to 221 lb-ft of torque and also acts as an alternator.
Both of the engines are connected to an eight-speed automatic transmission. Also on board is a 154-lb. no-maintenance 38 kW nickel metal hydride (NiMH) battery, measuring 13.7' x 24.9' x 11.5' and found in the spare tire well.
According to the manufacturer the new vehicle will hit 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 6.8 seconds and will emit 20% less CO2 than comparable combustion engine vehicles with similar power output.
With the electric motor installed the vehicle can hit an impressive 86 mph (138 km/h) without even use the combustion engine. The Cayenne S Hybrid will use less than 9 liters/100 km. Porsche assures us that the new hybrid system will be available also for the new Porsche Panamera gran-turismo!
The new Porsche Cayenne S Hybrid features the so-called Hybrid Manager, which is similar to the conventional engine control unit (ECU). However, the difference lies in the amount of data parameters they operate on – the Hybrid Manager needs around 20,000 parameters while a typical ECU works on less than a third.
A parallel full hybrid could operate in modes: power from the combustion engine only, and power from the electric motor only, power from the combustion engine, and electric motor. The Hybrid Manager primarily works to smoothly and seamlessly coordinate these threes modes to provide optimal performance and efficiency.
Since the clutch serves as the key link to the combustion engine and the electric motor, the Hybrid Manager takes care of delivering smooth yet quick switching between the three hybrid modes without any delay or any perceptible transition. For instance, the Porsche Cayenne S Hybrid could be driven on pure electric power for up to 1.2 miles.
But as soon as the driver steps on the accelerator, the Hybrid Manager will start the combustion engine, increase its speed suitably and then engage the clutch to send power to the transmission – all in just 300 milliseconds and without the driver or passengers noticing.
On the other hand, when the Porsche Cayenne S Hybrid is running using only the combustion engine, the Hybrid Manager will ensure it is operating in the most efficient way according to its load. Likewise, the Hybrid Manager will switch the electric motor to an alternator mode to generate electricity that can be stored in the NiMH battery.
When the brake pedal is pressed, the Hybrid Manager would send as much energy as possible from the electric motor -- as an alternator -- to the battery. Moreover, the Porsche Cayenne S Hybrid features a number of electrically driven ancillary components like the power steering pump and the air conditioning compressor.
