New AMG Driving Academy season to merge fun and concern for nature

Article by Anita Panait, on March 15, 2012

Interested parties should gear up for the 2012/2013 season of the AMG Driving Academy! The AMG Driving Academy has planned adrenalin-pumping and thrilling courses for the upcoming season, aiming to turn AMG enthusiastic motorist into skilled drivers. The renowned driver-training program is offering a variety of activities for the 2012/2013 season, including: pleasure-oriented EMOTION trips;  special winter training courses in the Lapland region of Sweden; and  exciting excursions to legendary race circuits like the Hockenheimring, Zandvoort and the Nürburgring Nordschleife. Participants should look forward to the Academy’s MASTERS program, which allows them to drive the SLS AMG GT3, the racing version of the gullwing model.

However, all events at AMG Driving Academy are special, since all participants get a chance to experience the incomparable performance that mirrors the AMG brand claim of "Driving Performance" to life. The AMG Driving Academy is also the first and only driving program in the world that offer carbon-neutral driving dynamics courses. This also makes the AMG Driving Academy the only driving program that seamlessly reconciles driving enjoyment and concern for the environment.

The principle of carbon neutrality is grounded on three pillars that are currently applied at all AMG Driving Academy courses: 1) avoidance of unnecessary wasting of resources; 2) implementation of measures that improves efficiency, which includes deployment of the latest AMG high-performance vehicles like the new SLK 55 AMG that consumes 30 percent less fuel than the previous model, thanks to a cylinder shut-off system; and 3) measurement of the CO2 emissions at a Driving Academy event, using the so-called "carbon footprint" as basis, with the aim to balance out the amount of emissions through its participation in climate protection projects.

The new 2012 SLK55 AMG from Mercedes-Benz is the third generation of the brand’s SLK range that was initially released back in June 2011. One look at this latest offering and there is no doubt it is sure to attract customers. One can see that the body style is one that is exclusive to the AMG and has two twin tailpipes plated in chrome and the AMG spoiler lip in the rear section.

Seen as well is how unique the light-alloy AMG wheels are. Combined, these all give it that distinct sporty feel while complementing the proportions of the classic proportions. Indeed, this new model is not simply instantly recognizable but also easily catches the eye. The best description however is that the 2012 SLK55 AMG is the best example of the Driving Performance AMG has long claimed.

This model is indeed the best especially in the high-performance compact Roadster class. Given the lower fuel consumption, distinct high technology features, excellent athleticism, and visible driving dynamics, this is not surprising. With the 5.5-liter V8 engine fitted inside, this makes the 2012 SLK55 AMG the most powerful of all the SLK to have been released. Maximum output is at 415 hp with peak torque of 398 lb.-ft.

This allows the model to go from standstill to 60 mph in merely 4.5 seconds. Top speed is electronically limited at 155 mph. These figures reveal that this latest generation of the SLK has the opportunity to beat the competition. In order to guarantee a high-performance drive, the brand made sure to put in Torque Vectoring Brakes and 3-stage ESP, Direct-Steer system, and the high-performance AMG braking system.

One feature of the engine is that it has a cylinder shutoff that is essential to achieve excellent performance with the best fuel efficiency. Aside from the excellent power delivered and the low fuel consumption, the engine also offers a unique sound on the exhaust that one generally hears on an 8-cylinder large-displacement engine.

Since the V8 engine is fitted in as part of the AMG Performance 2015 approach, it is expected to lower both fuel consumption and CO2 emissions for the next succeeding years. It is also expected to reach new levels of the Driving Performance claim. Through the M152 engine, AMG also hopes to show that it is socially responsible. Mercedes-Benz shared that the 2012 SLK55 AMG is expected to be delivered in showrooms across the U.S. during the early part of 2012.
