New Vw Touareg R to carry the same V8 engine as the upcoming Audi S8

Article by Christian Andrei, on August 26, 2010

As you may know already, the 2011 Volkswagen Touareg made its debut in March at the Geneva Motor Show, showing a new diesel and petrol engines as well as a hybrid version. Many of you folks are already asking us about the sporty version of the Touareg. After reading some media reports, we decided to contact our German source specialized in Volkswagen news and rumors.

Asked about a sport version of the Touareg, our source told us that a Touareg R (letter 'R' represents the sport division of Vw) is already on the drawing board and, like any other Volkswagen model, it will become greener.

Well, not that green because the new car will carry a powerful V8 engine (old generation was powered by a W12 delivering 450 hp) which will deliver over 500 hp. Apparently, the new Touareg R will receive the same V8 engine which will be found on the upcoming Audi S6, S7 and S8.

French media reports go even further and report that the next-generation Touareg R will carry a V6 engine as well as two electric motors, but talking to our sources it is unlikely to see this hybrid powertrain on the upcoming car. Regarding the debut, hard to tell, but we can hope to see it in January at the 2011 Detroit Auto Show
