Next-generation Tesla Roadster will be faster, have an improved range

Article by Christian Andrei, on April 5, 2013

Tesla has made a promise to build a new, flagship two-seat Roadster that will use the most advanced EV technology and will not be anything like what others are doing. Tesla hasn’t set a date yet of when it will launch the second-generation roadster but it may make it to the market in around five years after it has set up its core three-model lineup of EVs.

According to Tesla chief George Blankenship, the company wants to do things that are new and so this will be the next-generation roadster. The Model S saloon, which is the latest model from Tesla, is expected to start selling this year in the UK. The Model X SUV is expected to arrive next in 2014-2015 while a 3-series-sized four-door is expected in 2015-2016.

Blankenship thinks that EV technology is advancing so quickly that the new Roadster will be able to perform even better than the original Roadster’s 200-mile range and 0-60mph acceleration time of less than 4.0sec.

He said that the original roadster was a proof-of-concept car and that the company has built an electric car with a range of more than 200 miles and a 0-60mph acceleration time of shorter than four seconds.

He also talked about the Model S saloon, with a 0-60mph sprint time of 4.4sec and a range of 300 miles. In addition, Blankenship runs Tesla’s dealer network.

This is likely to be a responsibility that he will excel at, considering that he used to work for Apple Stores and helped distribute its products worldwide. He said that there’s a central London site where it will put up its first Tesla store in the UK.
