After few leaked photos, the all-new 2014 Audi S1 and S1 Sportback models were officially unveiled today! For those who don’t know, back in 1980s, the Audi S1 had a legendary reputation as it was the car that dominated the World Rally Championship. Now, the S1 badge is back and promises to offer all the virtues of a sports car and this means car, great performance, direct handling and permanent quattro drive.
As expected, the new Audi S1 is powered by a 2.0-liter TFSI engine fitted with a turbocharger, that delivers 231 hp (170 KW) and up to 370 Nm (272.90 lb-ft) of torque. As a result, the S1 accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 5.8 seconds (S1 Sportback in 5.9 seconds) and has a top speed electronically limited at 250 km/h or 155 mph.
Despite these numbers, fuel consumption remains low and the S1 needs consumes just 7.0 (33.60 US mpg) or 7.1 (33.13 US mpg) liters of fuel per 100 kilometers (162 and 166 grams CO2 per kilometer [260.71 g/mile / 267.15 g/mile]) respectively. Just like the other S models, the Audi S1 and S1 Sportback are both offered with the quattro permanent all-wheel drive onboard.
Due to its increased power, the S1 models feature a larger brake master cylinder but also larger brake discs – front 310 millimeters (12.20 in) in diameter – that ensure excellent deceleration. The red brake calipers with the S1 logo are available as an option. As standard, the S1 models are offered with 17-inch wheels wrapped in 215/40 R17 tires, while 18-inch wheels with 225/35 R18 tires are offered as an option.
Regarding the design, the S1 and S1 Sportback are instantly recognizable and come with xenon plus headlights, LED rear lights with new, horizontally structured graphics. Moreover, both models feature new front and rear bumpers, side sills and a four-pipe exhaust system that boast most striking styling. Audi also offers four new exterior colors for the S1 and S1 Sportback. As an option, Audi offers the optional quattro exterior styling package, which includes a larger roof spoiler and other features that were not detailed by the carmaker. The sporty theme is continued also at the interior, where the vehicles are finished in dark tones.
Black dominates, including on the air vent sleeves, while the instruments feature S-specific dark-gray scales; the pedal caps are made out of brushed stainless steel. As an option, the S1 models are available with the S sport seats with integrated head restraints. The quattro interior styling package can be selected as an option to add striking color accents. Pricing starts at €29,950 for the S1 models and at €30,800 for the S1 Sportback models. According to Audi, the vehicles will be available in Germany in the second quarter of 2014.
