OnStar advisors are known to have helped recover over 500 stolen General Motors’ vehicles monthly but recently, the feature has been helping retrieve even the competitors’ stolen vehicles. Last Dec. 18, a stolen 2006 Chrysler 300 was recovered with the help of OnStar. The vehicle’s owner is OnStar subscriber Jean Franklin of Gresham, Ore.
It was only two days before the theft that Franklin bought OnStar FMV (For My Vehicle), the new aftermarket system that comes standard with Stolen Vehicle Assistance. This security feature enables OnStar Advisors to take advantage of the product’s internal GPS to find the location of a stolen vehicle that was reported to authorities.
Here’s a timeline of what transpired on Sunday. At 7:30 a.m., Franklin called OnStar to report her stolen vehicle. OnStar gave the vehicle’s location to the Gresham Police Department. The police pulled over the car and placed the suspect in custody within just 64 minutes of the original call. Aaron Turnage, a Gresham Police Department officer who worked with OnStar to find the car, said that OnStar was “crucial” in the recovery of the vehicle.
He explained that they likely would have recovered the vehicle without the help of OnStar but then, the condition of the car may not be what it was before it was stolen. He said that OnStar was instrumental in recovering the car “almost immediately and it was completely unharmed.” In Gresham, vehicle thefts are a growing problem.
Compared to the past year, the motor vehicle thefts in the area have climbed by almost 27%, according to the FBI’s Preliminary Semiannual Uniform Crime Report. The National Insurance Crime Bureau said that the incidence of vehicle thefts increases in winter and that New Year’s Day is the favorite holiday of thieves. So far, OnStar Advisors have offered Stolen Vehicle Assistance services for over 58,000 times.
