Ordering begins for $117,895 2016 Dodge Viper ACR

Article by Christian Andrei, on May 13, 2015

Ordering has started for the 2016 Dodge Viper ACR (American Club Racer). This is a track variant of the two-seat sports coupe that features a much stiffer chassis and a big carbon-fiber rear wing as well as additional aerodynamic features to boost downforce. The last time that Dodge offered a Viper ACR was in 2010. The Viper was redesigned in 2012.

Like other Vipers, the street-legal race car is equipped with a 645-hp, 8.4-liter V-10 engine and six-speed manual transmission. However, its on-track performance is better due to revisions made to the chassis and suspension. It is built by hand at the assembly plant of Fiat Chrysler in Detroit. The buyer can have a unique car since it can be bought in a one-of-one configuration that other customers won’t be able to duplicate.

Tim Kuniskis, head of the Dodge brand and its SRT performance group, described this Viper track car as the fastest street-legal car that the company has ever made. He also referred to this car as the “halo” of its track segment. The ACR has a giant carbon-fiber rear wing and a one-of-a-kind hood to improve air flow and four dive planes.

These enable the car to remain glued to the track as it can tolerate lateral forces of as much as 1.5 times the force of gravity. While testing, Dodge announced that the ACR with its enhanced aerodynamic package produced almost 1 ton of downforce that permitted the car to hit a 177mph top speed.

In addition, Dodge had reinforced the current Viper’s Brembo brakes and made its wheels wider for a better on-track performance. The 2016 Viper ACR is priced at $117,895. Production will start in the third quarter of 2015.

From the start of the year until April, Dodge has sold 231 Vipers in the U.S. – about 9% lower than sales during the same period in 2014. As of May 1, Dodge had a 147-day supply for its countrywide inventory with 316 unsold Vipers.

Production of the 2016 Dodge Viper ACR will begin in third quarter 2015 at the Conner Avenue Assembly Plant. Vehicles will start arriving in dealerships in the third quarter of 2015.
