Pagani Huayra roadster version set to arrive in 2014

There will be a roadster version of the Huayra, Horacio Pagani revealed in an interview with Autoblog Argentina. The open-top Huayra is expected to arrive in about three years. The regular version of the Huayra was displayed at the Geneva Motor Show. It’s also expected that by 2014, the 60 degree 12 cylinder turbocharged engine with a displacement of 5980 cubic centimeters will offer more power.

The twin-turbocharged unit, which was developed by AMG, delivers 700hp at a low 5,000 rpm and a 811 pound-feet of torque at 3,500 rpm. It’s believed that the roadster will feature the same rear-wheel drive configuration and single clutch seven-speed automated Xtrac gearbox that were seen on the hard-top.

The supercar will also be fitted with a pair of flaps integrated into the bodywork at the front and rear. A computer will control these flaps and will adjust speed, yaw, lateral acceleration, steering angle and throttle position, in order to achieve optimal downforce.

The simplest way to describe the aerodynamic concept used in the Pagani Huayra is that it is in the form of a wing. This model can utilize this concept further by being able to modify any of the wing’s properties. It not only can dynamically adjust the front ride height but it can also make the necessary adjustments to each of the 4 control flaps located on the vehicle’s four corners. The main objective for including this concept is to be able to guarantee the vehicle’s neutral behavior regardless of what the current conditions are and to be able to control the body roll as well through aerodynamic methods.

These flaps are managed using a dedicated control unit that gets data from the ABS and the ECU. These systems supply the control unit with information that includes, among others, the current speed of the vehicle, throttle position, steering angle, lateral acceleration, and the yaw rate. In most vehicles, the drag coefficient is generally the determining factor when looking at aerodynamic efficiency. Such is not the case with the Pagani Huayra despite its aerodynamic efficiency improved to handle different driving conditions.

Take for example the scenario when the car is undergoing braking. In such a situation, there is often a weight transfer but in order to counteract this, the Pagani Huayra’s front suspension and rear flaps are immediately raised. As a result, it balances the distribution of the weight between its front axle and the rear axle, giving it a stronger rear brake force. In addition to having an aerodynamic concept, another important aspect of the design for this particular project was to make sure that the body would experience clean airflow. There are two engine air intakes that have been placed at the back of the occupants shoulders.

In terms of form, they pay tribute to the supersonic aircraft that was famous during the 1950s and even the 1960s. In terms of function, these intakes enable the motor to breathe without disrupting any of the air flow. Specifically, the intake that is designed for the gearbox radiator has been placed in the middle of the engine bay window and that of the rear bonnet’s carbon clamshell. As such, the radiator gets a good amount of airflow with experiencing any effects on the aerodynamic drag. This was one of the reasons why the rear wing was eventually removed and replaced instead with movable flaps. In designing the car, extra attention was put on studying the air flow that passes through the vehicle.

Thus, its radiators have been angled in a way that it helps with the downforce as well as offers the best flow of the hot air that can be extracted. The air that is coming from the central radiator goes out through the vents located on the front bonnet as well as the trough on its front wheelhouses.

Meanwhile the air that comes from the side radiators are directed to the ducts that help cool the wheel hubs and brake discs. The air that blows to its brakes do so at a temperature of around 50°C, which means it helps in warming the brakes in cold conditions and enhances the first bite of the brake significantly. Since there are also lateral air outlets placed at the back of its front wheels, these provide a negative pressure in its wheelhouse and thus give it a more efficient traction. This in turn lowers the drag coefficient while being able to produce downforce on its front.

Aside from the body and flaps producing the needed downforce, there are also high negative pressure areas, two of them in fact, that have been added. For the Pagani Huayra, these were included in the design and can be seen through how the underbody was shaped as well as the shape of the rear diffuser. This results in improving further the aerodynamic stability and more than guarantees that the vehicle has downforce no matter what the circumstances may be.

While the outside may be impressive, the interior is just as excellent. Once the door closes, one immediately gets the feeling as if one is being transported to an entirely new dimension that both surprises and pleases the senses. Many drivers prefer to have everything within reach but the Pagani Huayra continues to offer more. The driver, for example, will be able to see that all of the primary functions available in the vehicle can be accessed through the steering wheel.

In addition, with the gearshift paddles being mounted to its steering wheel, there is little or no need for the driver to remove his or her hands from the steering wheel. The seats are able to give the necessary lateral support that is important especially when encountering some g-forces during a rather extreme drive. These same seats also offer comfort that results in taking long trips that much enjoyable.

As such, one can say that the Pagani continues to provide drivers with modern day solution but without the need to sacrifice any of the traditions that came before it. The focus has always been to create a living and breathing being instead of one that is digital.

This is observed in most parts of the vehicle from the toggle switches and up to the leather latches. However, this particular philosophy is best expressed by its mechanical aluminum gearlever assembly, a testimony to the art that is the manual gearshift, an advancement that takes note of the past. Its aluminum dashboard is clearly inspired from the swiss watch and its complex designs.

One feature in this dashboard is the Multi-Function Display located in the center which shows the needed information when the SPORT mode has been activated and the trip computer in cases when the COMFORT mode is triggered.

This aluminum center console was created from a solid block of aluminum and contains the mechanical switches that control the HVAC system patterns in a clarinet style array. At the heart of the amazing video infotainment system is the high definition central touchscreen. This is the one that controls other functions like the audio, Bluetooth phone, secondary vehicle functions, and satellite navigation.
