Photographer rants about leaked pictures of 2011 Chrysler 200 Convertible

Article by Christian Andrei, on January 19, 2011

As the first images of the new 2011  Chrysler 200 Convertible were leaked last week by an insider, the carmaker decided to reveal all the details and photos of the vehicle well ahead of its schedule. Apparently, the photographer of the leaked images was very upset that they came out weeks earlier than planned.

Here is what NotBland Automotive Photography had to say: "Thanks entirely to one lone, misguided idiot somewhere outside of the fantastic marketing team at Chrysler, many of my photos were leaked online yesterday [last week], weeks in advance of the meticulously scheduled unveiling. Five weeks of careful planning and logistics by the crew destroyed in an instant, by one selfish arrogant douchebag who got a hold of the digital files before the CEO was set to review the images. Today, the marketing team got the go ahead to *officially* unveil the photos that were leaked, plus five more exclusive unseen images, complete with the official introduction to the new car.

So while I am excited for the world to see my newest set, it's goddamn infuriating that so many car blogs have already run many of the photos cropped awkwardly, without context or back story, and at a horribly compressed resolution, on top of that.

At the time of writing this, not very many sites have run the new press release yet, so as my fans, you get a true world unveiling for several of the photos. Rage-inducing leak aside, I hope you all enjoy my newest set.

A very special thank you to the amazing Will Stern for suffering three early mornings of frigid cold wind with me, to act as my chief lighting technician all three days of shooting. And of course the awesome four-man driver/detailing crew from Prestige Autos for their expert knowledge of the area; couldn't have found many of the locations we used without them."

Exterior Design

The 2011 Chrysler 200 Convertible boasts of a new design on the exterior with even the sheet metal used experiencing an upgrade. This can be seen on a number components like the new hood, the grille that now has the brand’s winged badge, the fascias on its front and rear, and the LED light pipe highlights in the front headlamps.

It also features new fog lamps and projector headlamps, new LED taillamps, rear deck lid and exterior mirrors, and LED center high-mounted stoplight. No matter what the driving situation is, the new Chrysler 200 offers customers a drive that has better handling performance as well as added fun.

Thus, whether it’s going on a weekend trip or driving daily to work, the Chrysler 200 is more than capable. In addition to the exterior, almost all components of its suspension have been redesigned or retuned as well, like 20 of the 28 suspension bushings. Even the suspension geometry was re-engineered. Since the track is wider by one inch, this has resulted into the tire width increasing to 225 mm from 215 mm.

The height meanwhile has lowered by as much as 12 mm on the front and 6 mm on the rear. This has led to the Chrysler 200 getting a more substantial stance since it is wider and lower. While customers will be able to drive the Chrysler 200 with more confidence, they will also experience reduced vehicle shaking when driving on uneven highways, less body roll, and better isolation on rough roads. The use of new premium tires helps increase the grip and there is also better steering feel, response, and precision.

Interior Design

The interior meanwhile is not without its new offerings. Once inside, one can immediately see that everything is first-rate, from the content, comfort, and the level of craftsmanship. The gauge face, bezels, one-piece instrument panel, and the Chrysler steering wheel manage to change a typical driver’s seat to one that shows a more sophisticated feel.

The seats have been upgraded as well and now have a new design that combines revised spring geometry and extra cushion material. It even uses new cloth and leather seating materials and with the six-way power driver and front-passenger seats, encases both driver and passengers.

Improving the interior further, designers added the new instrument panel and "soft touch" armrests. The addition of premium interior finish ensures that parts of the cabin are pleasing to look at in addition to being nice to touch.

The instrument panel has new cooling and heating outlets. The instrument panel not only has an improved design but it also has better functionality, which rounds off the already beautiful detailed interior. There are innovative features equipped in the Chrysler 200 which allows customers to be always connected and have something to look forward to when driving. This includes the new interior lighting.

The Chrysler brand steering-wheel has controls that enable the driver to manage the different features like the hands-free phone, cruise control, radio, and other functions. This also allows the driver to always keep their hands on the steering wheel. The media center allows for voice command making it easier to use.

In addition to making sure that the driver is always connected, there is also the SIRIUS Satellite Radio and the HDD/CD/DVD/MP3 radio that has 30 gigabytes of storage and with the SIRIUS Travel Link gives real-time information.

Coming standard in the Chrysler 200 are the different security and safety features that offer peace of mind with an affordable price. Safety features include the front-seat-mounted side air bags, advanced multi-stage front passenger air bags, active front-seat head restraints, four-wheel anti-lock brakes, and electronic stability control with brake assist and traction control.

There are also the Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children child seat anchor system, Brake Override, SentryKey engine immobilizer, security alarm, and remote keyless illuminated entry. Three versions will be offered to the U.S. market for this model. These are the 200 Convertible Limited, Chrysler 200 Convertible Touring, and 200 Convertible S.

The Convertible S though will arrive late to the market. Regardless of which configuration is chosen, they all have the same innovative, safety, style features, while offering the experience of dynamic and open-air driving at a good value. The Chrysler 200 Convertible Touring will enter the market with U.S. Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price starting at $26,445, which excludes the $750 destination cost.

Helping enhance the driving experience is the improved powertrain line-up. There is the Pentastar 3.6-liter V-6 engine that is paired to the 62TE six-speed transmission and that can deliver 283 horsepower and maximum torque of 260 lb.-ft. With this amount of horsepower, customers are ensured of an exhilarating driving experience.

Even with this performance, fuel economy remains remarkable with 29 mpg highway and 19 mpg city.

Another option is the recalibrated 2.4-liter World Gas Engine that is coupled with the six-speed transmission. This I-4 engine can deliver a maximum 173 horsepower with maximum torque at 166 lb.-ft. Fuel economy carries the EPA-rating of 18 mpg city and 29 mpg highway.
