Piaggio to launch a three-person, four-wheel minicar

Article by Christian A., on November 4, 2010

If you love old Italian movies then you must definitely know what a Vespa is, right? For those who don’t know Vespa scooter is the first globally successful scooter, known for its painted, pressed steel unibody which combines a complete cowling for the engine. These scooters are produced by Piaggio.

But know it appears that Piaggio is currently working on a three-person, four-wheel minicar developed for the European and Asian cities.

These words came from company Chairman Roberto Colaninno, who also added that the car will also have a hybrid version. According to the same Colaninno, the car will debut on the market within three years, but the company didn’t take any decision yet regarding the price or the plant where it will be built.

The new car will be a rival for the Smart and the Tata Nano minicars, but Colaninno said that the Italian company didn’t design the car as a competitor to the mentioned vehicles.

Regarding the engine, it seems that the cars will carry 200cc or 300cc engines, while the hybrid version will carry a 300cc engine plus electric alternative.

"The idea of the project was developed in India to deal with traffic in big cities. It is for big cities in Asia and Europe. I have very high numbers in mind in India," Colaninno said. [via autonews - sub. required]
