These are the latest renderings to come out of Alfa's all-new flagship saloon, the 169. While the 166 failed to live up to expectations, it's obvious from these images of the 169 that Alfa is back on track.
The design is certainly outstanding and may even signal a new styling direction for the company. The grill is definitely recognizable as an Alfa Romeo but the rear end is all-new.
Overall exterior is said to take inspiration from the new crop of four-door coupes such as the Mercedes-Benz CLS and Audi A5 Sportback. Looking at its flowing profile might also give off the impression of an elegant Maserati Quattroporte.
Although the 169 is pitched to be a direct 5-series rival, its top-end models are able to take on the Jaguar XJ. So that the 169 would be able to compete with the best of them, Alfa made it a rear wheel drive.
It's possible the Alfa would borrow the next Chrysler 300C platform, which is a slightly shortened version of the Quattroporte's underpinnings. Doing this has the added benefit of savings for both Chrysler and Fiat by sharing resources across several brands.
The engine lineup has yet to be finalized but it will likely to include all-new petrol and diesel V6s. It's also speculated that the 450bhp 4.7-liter V8 from the 8C Competizione supercar would be attached to a range-topping GTA variant. When this does happen, it's likely to pique the interest of the makers of the BMW M5 and Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG.
