Preview: BMW i10 Megacity

Article by Christian Andrei, on August 26, 2010

For now, we'd all have to settle for these artist impressions of the BMW i10, its upcoming electric hatch. These impressions show how the new BMW Megacity is expected to appear when it debuts in 2013.

This vehicle is commonly referred to as the i1 as it appears to have been inspired by the 1-Series. Nonetheless, it can also be easily mistaken for a miniature X6.

The five-seater will have just about the same size as the VW Golf, but the rear-wheel-driven car will be fully electric.

The "Megacity" range is part of a new BMW sub-brand and is a specialist division exclusively consisting of electric vehicles. BMW is jumping on this trend of the city-focused car as well. It will soon come up with designs for a two-wheeler and a three-wheeler.

The i1 will feature all the latest technologies and will be very light and aerodynamic too. The type of drivetrain hasn't been revealed yet, but it is likely to be closely linked to the Concept ActiveE, which was launched at the 2010 Detroit Motor Show.

BMW also disclosed plans to construct a plant in Moses Lake, Washington, that will house 80 employees and will be where much of the development process takes place.

With BMW's role as the official transportation provider for the 2012 London Olympics, prototype versions of the new i-range including the i1 are expected to transport athletes and officials around the Olympic village.
