Preview: Peugeot 408

Article by Christian Andrei, on August 26, 2010

Peugeot aimed to mix practicality and style in designing the new 408, a family hatchback vehicle. These exclusive pictures, which are said to come from those involved closely in the project, reveal the radical approach it has taken as it hopes to rival the Ford Mondeo and Vauxhall Insignia.

In a package that seems to be inspired by upmarket models such as Audi's A5, the new 408 also shows how a fresh emphasis on sporty design will shape future Peugeot models.

The 408, which comes hot on the heels of the RCZ Coupe, borrows inspiration from the recent 908 RC Concept. The car also has a wedge-like profile and a neat rear wing. Inside, you'll be awestruck at the big step forward in quality and technology.

The head-up display seen on the new 3008 is set to be included. Under the skin is an all-new chassis, based on that which underpins Citroen's latest C5. Hydropneumatic suspension and adaptive headlamps are also expected.

The car is expected to be offered in a wide range of petrol and diesel engines. Due to appear in 2011 is a diesel-electric hybrid model that promises low emissions. [via autoexpress]
