Renault’s electric cars coming in 2011

Article by Christian Andrei, on August 30, 2010

The on-sale dates, pricing and specification of Renault's electric car range have been revealed. In June 2011, an electric version of the new Fluence saloon and an electric Kangoo will go on sale in the UK.

Twizy arrives in August 2011, and the Zoe is set to show up in June 2012. The Fluence, Kangoo and Zoe will all be equipped with a 70kW (94bhp) motor, which boasts a range of 100 miles and a top speed of 80mph.

Meanwhile, the Twizy will be equipped with a smaller 15kW (20bhp) motor with a range of 60 miles and a top speed of 45mph.

Twizy will be offered either as a two-seater or as a single-seater. The Zoe, which is the first Renault designed specifically as an electric vehicle, will also be the first to feature the company's battery exchange.

This means that spent batteries can be replaced by fresh ones at a 'Quickdrop' center. But Renault UK electric vehicles boss Andy Heiron said that due to the lack of infrastructure, this can't be considered to be a practical solution until the second half of this decade.

With the government providing a £5000 incentive, the Zoe will be priced about £14,000, which Heiron said is what a diesel Clio Dynamique is priced. This amount is exclusive of the cost of the battery rental for private consumers.
