Report: GM working on two new city cars

Article by Christian Andrei, on November 8, 2010

Although we knew that General Motors is working on a new small car, believed to be a production version of the Trixx Concept, it appears that the American manufacturer is working not on one, but two new small cars that will join the Opel/Vauxhall Corsa by the middle of this decade.

According to Autocar, the new premium hatch will also be joined by a budget-priced city car, which will use a new different platform.

Both of the cars are currently being developed and engineered in Korea, according to GM DAT boss Mike Arcamone.

Same Arcamone also said that the new car that will take on Bmw’s MINI, was almost completely developed in Asia, still, the German engineers helped on its development.

In an interview with Autocar, design boss Taewon Kim said that the final design of the car is not finished. Still, the car will make its debut in 2013. Also, Mike Arcamone said that the new Chevrolet Volt might also be produced in Korea.

He also added that the manufacturer might underestimate how many Chevrolet Volt models it can sell. Furthermore, Korea could become a centre for pure electric vehicles as GM is beginning a trial for EV Cruze and Lacetti saloons.
