Small cars join luxury vehicles in WardsAuto’s 10 Best Interiors 2012 list

Article by Anita Panait, on April 18, 2012

WardsAuto has released its “10 Best Interiors” list for 2012, dominated by four subcompact and compact models. Subcompact and compact models? Yes, you read it right. These models are the Chevrolet Sonic, Hyundai Accent, Volkswagen Beetle and Dodge Dart. This sends a strong message that cheap cars do not necessarily mean cheap interiors. Cheap cars could offer the best interiors in the world, and editors of the Wards Auto are sure that they made the right choices. According to WardsAuto, the Sonic brings a new level of style, while the Accent boasts of an interior that shows incredible attention to detail. The Beetle, meanwhile, features the right combination of contemporary technology and aspects attributable to the “iconic Bug.” The Dart made it to the list by impressing editors with its features like the heated steering wheel, Nappa leather, and dual-zone climate control. Other small cars like the Fiat 500 Abarth and Toyota Prius c failed to make the cut.

Six of the remaining vehicles that made the list are luxury cars and sports utility vehicles – Audi A7, Hyundai Azera, Chrysler 300 Luxury Series, Infiniti JX, Land Rover Evoque and the 2012 Mazda CX-5 crossover. According to WardsAuto, Audi A7 was chosen for its matte wood and dramatic interior styling. The Azera, meanwhile, made the list thanks to its usage of only premium materials. The 300 Luxury is described as an affordable family sedan that looks like a Bentley. The CX-5 was able to impress editors with its soft-touch materials, metallic accents and available perforated leather seats.

Luxury vehicles that failed to make the cut include the new BMW 3 Series, the Mercedes-Benz C250, and the Audi A6. WardsAuto editors have to choose between 40 entries this year, with no definite ranking among the top ten. WardsAuto World Editor-in-Chief Drew Winter remarked that this year, they saw “a tremendously diverse group of interiors,” that are “beautifully appointed, well-equipped and extremely comfortable.”  Winter said that based on what they have seen on recent auto show, the competition among interiors will be more intense in the next few years.
