Smart ForTwo Discoball: this is disco baby!

Article by Christian Andrei, on March 17, 2011

Experimental artist formation 'Apparatjik' has created the glitzy 'disco-ball' look of this one-off smart fortwo electric vehicle in Berlin. It will be used in a film titled 'Pixel City' and was made for the current installation at Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin. The car is totally covered in reflective glass tiles from the roof to the hub caps and the windows also have a mirror finish.

On March 26 to 27, there will be live performances to bring this project to a climax. Smart is the official main sponsor in this project by Apparatjik, featuring Magne Furuholmen of a-ha, Guy Berryman of Coldplay, Jonas Bjerre of Mew and music producer Martin Terefe.

The "Apparatjik Light Space Modular" doesn’t only feature concerts; it’s also an interactive installation that gathers data to be turned into a piece of music. Deutsches Kammerorchester will perform the derived song and it will be accompanied by an image show titled 'Apparat TV'. A six metre tall cube will stream out the projections into the city through the museum's glass walls. Apparatjik will be performing live inside that cube. Tickets are available via apparatjik.com.

Giving the new generation Smart Fortwo a more eye-catching appearance is the availability of a wider range of colors. From the choice of six colors for exterior in previous models, the brand is now offering seven choices with a trendy matt finish. Aside from the new matt light green color, the blue metallic color has been replaced with the light blue metallic color. The brand will also accept, on request, to have the front spoiler, the side skirt, and even the rear apron be in the same color as the body.

There are plans in the future to have the fuel filler cap come in the same color as that of the body. The available colors is extended even further with the brand offering for the Smart Fortwo the red and blue cabrio soft top with the tridion safety cell coming in brilliant white. To match the color of the white safety cell, the door mirror surrounds and even the radiator grille have been painted white. As a result of these different possible combinations and the collection of modern colors, these results in the Smart Fortwo have an entirely new face.

Another striking detail in the Smart Fortwo is the LED daytime driving lights, though this is offered as an option. Helping provide new ideas to the style and design are the new three alloy 15-inch wheels. Aside from the exterior, the interior has been redesigned as well in order to give the Smart Fortwo a spacious, fresh, and feel-good atmosphere. Its instrument panel has been completely covered in full fabric and exhibits a new style and new fabric designs.

Other equipment features in the Smart Fortwo highlights the attention to detail given to this vehicle. The new dials on both the dashboard instruments and instrument cluster are contrasted with a dark central disc. Offered as an option is the folding center armrest that has been covered in fabric as well. Then there is the leather 3-spoke steering wheel that offers cruise control function and even a trip computer, though this is offered as an option as well.

Customers who want to have a more pleasing lighting atmosphere can choose to have the new ambient lighting that comes with the dimmable LEDs. Complementing the new style is a wide range of practical details and clever stowage facilities. A good example of this is the large stowage box, which though available as an option as well, can be placed on the lower section of its center console. Optional glove compartment is also offered and this time it includes a clip function to hold notes.

Offering more practical stowage space are the seat pockets that are located on the sides of its seats. There is also the tailgate’s one-hand operation which not only improves comfort but is another practical detail.
