Audi's midsize class models, comprising the Audi A4 and its predecessor Audi 80, make up the heart of the brand. The company celebrated a true milestone in production recently. In October, the ten millionth midsize Audi was produced -- a Misano Red Audi S4 with a V6 engine producing 245 kW (333 hp) of output and an alabaster-white and black interior.
At its Ingolstadt facility, the company has been manufacturing the A4 model family since 1994. It also produced the model in Neckarsulm since 2007 through the "production turntable."
The A4 Avant, the Audi A4 sedan, the S4 sedan, the S4 Avant and the A4 allroad quattro roll off the assembly line in Ingolstadt. At the Neckarsulm site, a certain number of A4 sedan models are produced too. Peter Mosch, Chairman of the General Works Council at Audi AG, discussed that the A4 family "ensures that capacity utilization will remain high" over the long term at the companies core facilities in Neckarsulm and Ingolstadt, ensuring job security.
He further stated that the success was made possible "in large part" by the company's Production colleagues, who utilize their wide-ranging expertise and considerable commitment to produce the Audi A4 and as well as their unrelenting devotion to top quality.
“Ten million midsize vehicles is an achievement which makes us thrilled and proud,” says Frank Dreves, Board Member for Production at AUDI AG. “Thanks to its sophisticated technology and excellent quality, the Audi A4 is our bestseller – winning over customers in every market since it was launched. With our strong team and our effective Audi production system, we will continue writing this success story, especially as a modified version of the Audi A4 will soon be launched.” P.S. The new Audi A4 is ready to take on the midsize car market anew with its powerful yet highly efficient engines, its dynamic running gear and technologies derived from the large-car category as well as new styling and proportions. Compared to its predecessor, the new Audi A4 has new and sportier proportions as well as taut and dynamic outlines.
For instance, the new Audi A4 features longer wheelbase and bonnet as well as shorter front overhang. Audi was able to move the front axle forward by 154 mm by trading the positions of the driveline differential and the clutch (or torque converter), thereby resulting to ideal axle-load distribution. With this configuration, the new A4 boasts of being the sportiest saloon among midsize cars with its agile and precise-to-control nature.
Audi also provided the new A4 with a newly designed suspension with most components made of light aluminum, allowing the premium midsize car to deliver dynamic road behavior as well as precise handling. Measuring 4.70 meters in overall length, the new Audi A4 saloon dons an aggressively dynamic road stance with more than enough room to comfortably seat its occupants in a luxurious manner.
As is typical of Audi premium vehicles, the new A4 features high-quality workmanship and refinement. Customers could further augment its controls by availing of an array of state-of-the-art assistance and multimedia systems. In terms of safety, the new Audi A4 boasts of perfectly coordinated actions of the airbags and the front seat belt force limiters.
Of course, any Audi vehicle would be incomplete without offerings of new high-tech options. For instance, in an effort to make the new A4 more enjoyable to drive, customers may avail of the Audi drive select, which could vary the characteristics of the engine, automatic transmission and steering as well as suspension damping to better fit the driver's preferences.
Likewise, Audi dynamic steering could vary its ratio according to the A4’s current speed, thereby keeping the saloon’s stability close to its handling limits through slight yet almost instantaneous changes to the steering angle.
Moreover, damping control system for the hydraulic shock absorbers could vary the damping characteristic to ensure optimal road safety and sporty driving enjoyment. Audi will commence sales of the new Audi A4 at the end of November 2007, at a starting price of around EUR26,000 in Germany.
