SEAT commenced selling its most popular car, the SEAT Ibiza, in China on April 21, 2013, the same day that the Auto Shanghai 2013 officially opened. The SEAT Ibiza is considered as the best-selling and most-exported Spanish car in history, and is regarded as one of the most successful models in its segment in Europe.
Since it was first produced in 1984, around 4.8 million Ibiza units have been sold, with around 69% of them exported to other markets where SEAT is competing like Germany, France and Italy.
The Ibiza is also SEAT’s top-selling model in the United Kingdom, having sold 17,786 vehicles in the country in 2012. SEAT is planning to market all three versions of the Ibiza in China: the sporty compact three-door SC, the practical Ibiza ST estate, and the universal five-door Ibiza.
The Ibiza will be available in two trims: Style and FR. Powering the models are engines ranging from 105 PS to 150 PS.
SEAT will also start selling the new Leon in early 2014, though interested buyers could already order the vehicle. The Leon is also SEAT’s main star at Auto Shanghai 2013. The Spanish carmaker will also add the SEAT Alhambra MPV and the Ibiza Cupra to its Chinese lineup in the second half of 2013.
“We can now truly say that SEAT is in China,” remarked Weiming Soh, member of the Board of Volkswagen Group China responsible for Sales and Marketing, during SEAT’s presentation at Auto Shanghai 2013.
He said that over the next 12 months, SEAT will roll out a wide-ranging product offensive. He noted that SEAT growth in China will be pioneered by the Ibiza, adding that the “attractive combination of design and technology” in the carmaker’s vehicles will seduce demanding Chinese customers.
