Audi has donated a very special R8 sports car for this year's star-studded White Tie and Tiara Ball, which has always been held at the home of Sir Elton John and his partner David Furnish. The event was set to take place on June 23, Thursday.
A dazzling and one-of-a-kind mirror-like chromed finish has been applied to the 194mph open-top sports vehicle that has been especially made for the occasion in order to attract the highest potential bids in the auction that will fund the Elton John Aids Foundation (EJAF) annually.
The fundraising ball is a "golden ticket event" that is both glamorous as well as highly effective in terms of raising funds, Director Jeremy Hicks of Audi UK commented. He further stated that the Audi is proud to support the event for the ninth year with the donation, which is "arguably" the company's most "fittingly glamorous model."
The R8 Spyder boasts of a fully-automatic lightweight fabric hood that brings wind-in-hair intensity to driving experience brought about by the lightweight aluminum quattro-equipped super car. The donated vehicle model can top 194mph. It can also blast to 62mph from rest in just 4.1 seconds. In addition, the vehicle has exceptional ten-cylinder, 525PS petrol engine with manual transmission. It is normally pegged at £117,710 OTR.
When it comes to how the Audi R8 has been designed, experts have long been impressed and it is no wonder why it achieved a double victory during the 2008 World Car of the Year Awards. It is good to note that in terms of style, the one for this ten-cylinder unit has been honed even further. With its full and wide shape, the Audi R8 V10 5.2 FSI Quattro has the appearance as if it is embracing the highway.
That it has a high potential is highlighted by the fact that wheel wells are more noticeable and its muscular proportions. As expected from an Audi product, the roof sports an elegant curve while the lines have been styled in a high-precision. There is also that continuous outline which optically connects its front, sides, rear, and even the wheel wells. Placed a bit more forward, the cab appears to have a mid-engine design. Its vertical air scoops that are placed on the sides, also known as the sideblades, show where the engine is located. Mounted flush on its right sideblade is the large aluminum gas cap. There are other details that make the Audi R8 V10’s body very distinct.
Unlike in the eight-cylinder variant, the sideblades in this new ten-cylinder version are highlighted further. In addition, the side sills are not just wider but striking as well. Meanwhile on the rear windows are the exhaust grilles that come with a matt aluminum look. Its ten-cylinder engine and all the wonderful technical aspects can be seen by merely looking through its large rear window. Though the headlights composed entirely of LEDs are fitted as standard, these are in fact the model’s characteristic highlight. This is not surprising as Audi is the first automaker in the world to utilize LEDs for the turn signals, daytime running lights, low beam, and the high beam. The LED light in fact has a color temperature of around 6,000 Kelvin, which means it is similar to actual daylight.
As a result, driving at night is less strenuous to the eyes especially at night. It does not stop there as having LEDs not only ensure excellent illumination but also allow for low energy consumption. It even gives a service life that is nearly unlimited. It comes with a rear spoiler that immediately deploys once the speed reaches 100 km/h. Then there is also the underbody that has been fully enclosed and ends in the diffuser that is curved upward sharply.
With these two combined, it ensures that the Audi R8 V10 has a downforce when being driven and results in a secure contact with the highway. Its rear portion is dominated with a high-gloss black finish which includes the LED tail lights’ settings. The rear end also has those air outlets that make use of simply two cross-braces instead of the usual four with the exhaust system ending in the two oval tailpipes. Meanwhile the air inlets on the front allow the coolers to be fed with air. The front apron’s lip is similar to the rear end as it is also in high-gloss black. Its single-frame grille’s vanes have that outstanding finish in chrome.
Its interior is just as excellent as it gives a rather distinct racing atmosphere but still has a luxurious level. One of its most dominant characteristic is a wide arc where the cockpit and the steering wheel have been placed. This is known as the monoposto. Being an Audi, that the workmanship displays the highest of quality is without question. Both the door and the dashboard have fine materials lining them. The two even have that decorative seams stitched to them. It does not stop there as Audi offers a wide array of customizations. The leather for example has a wide range of colors.
There are also packages that include carbon and even a piano-lacquer finish. It is also possible to have a customized luggage set. Responsible for developing and creating the Audi R8 V10, quattro GmbH will be offering solutions to certain requirements that may seem to be unconventional. The new Audi R8 V10 sets standards when it comes to rigidity and body weight since this is generally what a sports car demands.
Audi is able to accomplish these with its very own Audi Space Frame technology and the use of high-tech aluminum construction. Its body, which is in white, weighs around 210 kilograms (463 lb), and this includes the engine frame that is composed of ultra-light magnesium. In terms of the relation of the weight to the torsional rigidity, its lightweight design is considered as one of the best in the sports car class. The body is made up of very complex gusset castings, profile extrusions, and sheet aluminum. Ensuring that everything is being held together are 308 special screws, 782 rivets, and welding seams at around 99 meters (325 ft).
