Unidentified Ferrari caught testing has caused a furor

Article by Andrew Christian, on April 26, 2016

Many theories came out after pictures of a mystery Ferrari being tested a few weeks ago were released online. There doesn’t seem to be a consensus on what it actually is. Some so-called experts have come out to say that this is the new Ferrari Dino. Let’s consider that for a moment. The Ferrari Dino is a low-cost marque from the Italian automaker that was made to cater to the general public.

It was dubbed as the “poor man’s Ferrari”, however it did not necessarily mean that the Dino was as cheap as any regular sedan. It still possessed the same luster as any old Ferrari would minus the Italian automaker’s badge. There were two lines for the Dino sports cars: the GT model which was produced by Ferrari, and the coupe and spider models that were produced by Fiat which were the cheaper models.

The Dino was named in honor of the founder’s late son, Alfredo “Dino” Ferrari, who was the designer of the V6 engine that is being used by the said coupe. The first of its kind, the Ferrari Dino 246 GT, can sprint from 0 to 60 mph in 7.1 seconds and can reach a top speed of 146 mph. Now, Ferrari Dinos are rare and remain to be a popular classic loved by collectors and Ferrari-lovers in general.

Meanwhile, some camps believe that this car is a special edition Ferrari 488 GTB. This two-passenger berlinetta succeeded Ferrari’s 458 Italia. It was introduced to the public in February 2015 and was next seen in the Geneva Motor Show a month later. It is powered by a twin-turbo 3.9-liter V8 engine that can produce 661 horsepower. With its dual-clutch seven-speed transmission, the 488 GTB can speed up from 0 to 60 in 3.0 seconds and a top speed of about 205 mph. Not bad for a mid-engined sports car. The 488 GTB is currently considered as a mainstream supercar.

This unidentified new V6 turbo powered mid-engined Ferrari has been stirring up the news and Ferrari fans as well. Some have labelled this new coupe as a “test mule for the Dino” but there are also some who speculate it to be a special edition of the 488 GTB just like the 488 Speciale model. Well, whatever its ancestor is, rest assured that this latest V6 Ferrari has got a lot under its hood.

According to Ferrari Far East Regional CEO Dieter Knechtel, the V6 will be a somewhere in between a Dino, a California T and a 488 GTB. It is expected to be a mid-engine compact coupe that will be powered by a twin-turbo 2.9-liter V6 engine, much to purists’ dismay. However, it will produce around 450 to 600 horsepower which is a lot of energy for a V6-powered coupe.

The photos of the said vehicle have shown three different colors – red, blue and white. It also comes with hood stripes in the colors of the Italian flag. There are a few notable differences between the new V6 and the 488 GTB which includes air intakes in a different position as the 488 GTB, new window profiles, and altered front fascia.

Unlike the original Dino, the V6 Ferrari will not be as cheap. Its expected price will start at around $230,000. It is something that will definitely be a must-buy for wealthy customers especially for those who want to stand out from the crowd. It has inherited the charisma that the Dino and 488 GTB, and brought to an all-new level. All that we can do now is speculate and wait for confirmation from the automaker.
