BMW’s premium compact offering, the BMW 1-Series, has long been associated with driving pleasure. In addition to this quality, the second generation will now come with advanced engine technology and innovative suspension technology as well. Fuel efficiency has been enhanced with the new generation and it offers more space. There is also a wider range of innovative equipment and features.

The 1-Series remains to be the sole vehicle in its segment to have a rear-wheel drive and it uses the strength of the first generation, given that more than 1 million units have been sold around the world. With its premium image, state-of-the-art technology, excellent design and handling, the new 1-Series has more than managed to solidify its position as the leading individualist in this very competitive five-door class.

For the new 1-Series, all of the engines will be 4-cylinder units that are equipped with the brand’s very own TwinPower Turbo technology. The new generation will also include petrol engines; thus managing to mix a sporty feel with low fuel consumption and reduced emissions. Specifically, the engine is a 1.6-liter unit that has direct injection, Double-VANOS, twin-scroll turbochargers, and VALVETRONIC. For the 116i, the output is at 100 kW (136 hp) while the 118i has its output at 125 kW (170 hp). Compared to the previous generation, fuel consumption is reduced by as much as 10% while the 116i has an output higher at 10 kW with the 118i higher by 20 kW. Meanwhile the brand has redesigned the turbocharged 2.0-liter diesel engine and now has common-rail direct fuel injection and variable turbine geometry.

The BMW 116d has an output of 85 kW (116 hp) with the 118d producing 105 kW (143 hp) while the 120d delivers 135 kW (184 hp). This strengthens the superior fuel efficiency of the 1-Series especially in the compact segment. Unlike other models from BMW, the 1-Series is the first model in its segment to be offered the automatic 8speed gearbox as an option. Similar to the previous generation, it comes with the standard BMW EfficientDynamics technology package.

As part of this technology package, it has the Automatic Start/Stop function that can come with either an automatic transmission or a manual one. With the driving experience switch, the ECO PRO mode ensures improved environmental performance. The brand reveals that it intends to widen the 116d EfficientDynamics Edition’s range. This offers an output at 85 kW (116 hp).

The technologies equipped means that fuel consumption is at 3.8 liters for every 100 kilometers while CO2 emissions under the EU combined cycle stand at 99 grams for every kilometer. These figures however remain to be conditional for the moment. The new generation version will offer more in terms of having a balance between driving comfort and sportiness. Functionality has been improved as well with various driver assistance systems that were previously offered in higher segments now available as well.

In terms of dimensions, the new 1-Series is longer by 85 mm compared to the previous model at 4,324 mm. Making the car look even more powerful is the width of 1,765 mm, a 17-mm increase. This is due its wheelbase being made wider by 30 mm at 2,690 mm, and a track that is longer by 51 mm on the front with the back experiencing a 72-mm increase.

Height however is the same at 1,421 mm. Even then, the rear seats offer legroom which is 21 mm more. Luggage compartment meanwhile was enlarged by as much as 30 liters and is now 360 liters. One of the highlights of the new 1-Series is that it is equipped with the latest in technological advances. While the model does have a young and fresh image, it has been updated stylishly using body surfaces that have been moulded with precision and a functional and contemporary interior that highlights its premium status. Then there are the Sport Line and the Urban Line which offers two choices for both the exterior and interior and has equipment that allows for more exclusive personalization options.

Another feature that is unique in the 1-Series is the ConnectedDrive. This is an optional package that includes mobility services and driver assistance. Other features in this package include the cruise control with brake function, high-beam assistance, parking assistance, reversing camera, and the speed-limit and no-passing information. There is also the Adaptive Headlights, Collision Warning and Lane Departure Warning. The ConnectedDrive package also allows for internet connectivity, Twitter and Facebook apps, web radio, real-time traffic information, and better music player and smartphone integration.
