Video: 2013 Maserati Quattroporte

Maserati has made its new Quattroporte sedan longer in order to attract customers who traditionally purchase long-wheelbase versions of Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz flagships, sources privy to the carmaker told Automotive News Europe. According to the sources, the new Quattroporte sedan will now have a length of 5300mm, longer than the outgoing model by 200mm.

This will make the Quattroporte be as long as its target rivals, including the Audi A8, BMW 7 series and the Mercedes S class, which all measure between 5200mm and 5300mm. Maserati will unveil the Quattroporte luxury sedan at the Detroit auto show in January 2013, before rolling it out for sale in Europe in the spring and in the United States in the summer.

The Quattroporte is considered a vital part of the plan of Fiat chief executive Sergio Marchionne to increase Maserati sales to 50,000 units annually by 2015 from just 6,159 units in 2011. Maserati hopes to sell 12,000 Quattroportes annually, which is more than two times the peak sales posted by the current model in 2007 with 5,088 units delivered.

While Fiat’s luxury vehicle subsidiary has released images of the new Quattroporte ahead of its Detroit debut, Maserati did not issue any technical details for the new car. However, Maserati disclosed that the Quattroporte will be powered by a new V-8 engine that could produce up to 530 hp. The carmaker will also offer an all-wheel-drive version powered by a new V-6 engine.

Maserati design boss Lorenzo Ramaciotti said in a statement that some elements of the outgoing Quattroporte model were retained on the new vehicle, including the front grille, the three side vents and the triangular C-pillar. Ramaciotti said they also introduced new style and functional features, including a strong belt line that runs through the entire side of the vehicle, giving the new Quattroporte a muscular and elegant look, complemented by frameless doors and three side windows.

Even since Maserati launched the original Quattroporte for the 1963 model year, the brand has been regarded as an expert in terms of sports saloon design. Now, the latest iteration of the Quattroporte features a design marked by a dynamic engine, a large cabin, a long nose and short overhang.

Marco Tencone, Head of Maserati Centro Stile, remarked that the design of the new Quattroporte takes inspiration from the brand’s core stylistic principles that include harmonious proportions, dynamic lines as well as Italian elegance. He noted that with Maserati’s strong heritage, it is expected that the Quattroporte is laden with the brand’s most distinctive features like the triangular C pillar with the logo, contour of the front air intake, and three small outlets on the front wings.

Tencone added that these design cues, as well as the character line running on the side, help define the strong volume of the rear wing while giving the car its muscular appearance. In addition, the new Quattroporte comes with a sleek cabin with a three-window treatment and frameless doors. Tencone further described the Quattroporte as a high performance sports saloon with a light, sensual and modern design that conveys Maserati’s most famous stylistic touches.
