Video: Roger Federer drives the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Roadster

Article by Christian Andrei, on June 6, 2011

Being Roger Federer right now can’t be all that bad (even if he lost the Roland Garros championship against Rafael Nadal). Federer is featured in a video for the commercial of the new 2012 SLS AMG Roadster from Mercedes-Benz that takes place in Dubai’s deserts. The video was shot in March but it was only released after the SLS AMG Roadster’s official unveiling about a week ago.

In this video, Federer describes the car as being “wonderful” and giving him “absolute pleasure” and an “exhilarated feeling.” He says at the end of the video: “This is one of the cars of all time favorites. I love it.” It’s likely to be true since this is one awesome vehicle.

Powering the SLS AMG Roadster is a 6.3 liter V8 engine that delivers 563bhp and with 650 Nm (480 lb.ft) of torque. It is coupled to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, enabling the car to sprint from zero to 100 km/h (62 mph) in only 3.7 seconds and reach a limited top speed of 317 km/h (197 mph).

Mercedes-Benz adds a new roadster to their incredible SLS-AMG range. Gorden Wagener, the Head of Design at Mercedes-Benz, said there is nothing ordinary about the new Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Roadster and similar to its gullwing model (which boasts clean, dynamic lines), the new Roaster is an “enthusiast’s dream.”

The aerodynamics of the Roadster includes a long hood, a short rear end, and a greenhouse positioned perfectly and perfunctorily towards the rear. An extendable rear wing, longer wheelbase, short overhangs and a wide track give the convertible Roadster a charm all of its own.

This charm carries the Roadster forward with a set of powerful pronounced shoulders and broad, weight-optimized wheels - 265/35 ZR 19 (front) and 295/30 ZR 20 (rear) which has features similar to the classic 300 SL Roadster. Available in a beautiful brown metallic finish, the wheels come in a 10-spoke design and can be painted black as an extra.

With features taken from the 300 SL (Mercedes-Benz’s most successful, beloved car from the 1950s), the new Roadster now has the wide radiator grille fitted to the wing-shaped cross-fins, the fins on the rear and the sides and the large Mercedes logo.

For those enthusiasts of the SLS series, the new interior atmosphere of the Roadster is comparable to that of an aircraft cockpit. The wing-shaped dash and adjustable air vents with their cruciform nozzles are reminiscent of jet engines. The new E-SELECT, solid metal, lever is deliberately shaped like the thrust control in an aircraft and the AMG emblem is finely embossed on the gear selector.

The carbon-fiber AMG DRIVE UNIT, located in the center of the console, is where you will be able to make your own alterations and set up the vehicle to your own wishes, one option is the Adaptive AMG Sport Suspension. The steering wheel now lined in premium leather and made from solid metal has a flattened bottom rim section which is effortlessly comfortable as are the shift paddles.

The Roadster comes with a fully automatic, weight-optimized soft top which can be opened and closed at speeds up to 31 mph (50 km/h), in only eleven seconds and is located quite comfortably at the front of the center armrest.

When the soft-top is open, it adds to the SLS AMG Roadster experience and you can feel the power of the eight-cylinder engine flowing through you. With its 563 hp and 479 pound-feet of torque, there is no mistaking the power and roar of the AMG engine sound.

The three-layered fabric soft-top, which can be weight-optimized using magnesium, steel or aluminum, can be modified in terms of its color depending upon personal preferences, with variations including up to nine exterior and eight interior colors. It also stores itself behind the seats in a convenient folded Z-configuration. The soft top contains a seamless bonded rear window with a heated solitary layer of safety glass. This protection extends to the outer roof skin which helps to minimise the wind noise.

There is no chance of leaking with a double protective flexible pocket designed to capture rainwater and redirect it towards a series of apertures on each side. Finally the size of the trunk is 6.1 cubic feet no matter whether the flat top is open or closed which is almost the same size as the Coupe at 6.2 cubic feet.
