At the upcoming round of the Swedish TTA - Racing Elite League on June 16, expect to see a performance concept road car by Polestar. This vehicle, officially named the Volvo S60 Polestar, is based on the Volvo S60 platform. It will be seen during the third round of the new racing series, which will take place at Polestar's home track in downtown Gothenburg, Sweden.
Polestar Marketing Director Hans Bååth said that this performance concept road-car is a spin-off of its work to assess and develop the S60 for racing. There was instantly a lot of interest around the world after the introduction of the Volvo C30 Polestar in 2010. Polestar has received a ton of requests from interested consumers.
However, the first Polestar concept-car was not initially meant to be produced. Polestar was at the FIA World Touring Car Championship to campaign for the Volvo C30 WTCC. The first S60 Polestar is produced for a very enthusiastic bidder for the original C30 Polestar.
Bath said that it’s an “open question” if more cars will be made. He also said that there first has to be feedback for the first prototype. Last year, Volvo made the choice to shift its race-car entry from the C30 to the S60 model.
What Polestar did next was to begin a comprehensive research and evaluation-program to gather vehicle data from the S60 platform. However, Polestar has yet to make the final decision on which racing class to participate in.
Polestar also thinks that it has a lot to learn about the built-in characteristics if the S60. Jan Andersson, who oversees complete vehicle development at Polestar, said that what they discovered was a “very strong” Volvo that could be a good fit to motorsport and that also had a nearly perfect platform for a road-going performance car. Volvo's engineers are famous for their expertise in car and traffic safety.
