While talks are ongoing between Renault and partner Nissan to increase their stake in AvtoVAZ (Russia's biggest automaker), there’s already a plan for AvtoVAZ to begin production of a sedan built on a Renault platform this February. When interviewed at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, AvtoVAZ CEO Igor Komarov said that the first of the new Lada models will be made at the end of February. He added that AvtoVAZ would build Nissan-branded cars on the same line at a later period. This enables AvtoVAZ to increase output by as many as 750,000 cars this year from about 630,000 last year. On Jan. 9, Renault-Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn said that the partnership could be "weeks" away from an agreement with AvtoVAZ shareholders to increase its stake to 50% from the 25% that Renault presently holds by itself. Komarov thinks that Renault-Nissan will enter a deal with other shareholders "soonest."
