AWD Volkswagen GTI-R coming to Frankfurt

2009 Vw Golf VI GTI

There is going to be a Golf GTI that's harder and faster that Volkswagen is set to launch in the autumn of this year. The new hotter hatch is dubbed as the VW Golf GTI-R and will keep in step with the classic performance characteristics of more power to lighter weight ratio of the Golf GTI (Mk6) to bring it from a polished and practical fast hatch to a little monster. German sources point out that the R version will not utilize the retiring V6 engine of the R32, rather it will be getting a lighter four-cylinder turbocharged unit that comes with 266 hp. This sounds more like the engine of the Audi S3 which will also be employed on the upcoming Scirocco R20T.

The German carmaker is not just depending on the 60 hp bump from the upcoming standard VW Golf GTI. There are reports coming out that VW will be utilizing a FWD to harmonize the thrust instead of using a front differential that was used by the Focus RS and the latest Renaultsport Megane 250.

A weight loss program is inevitable due to the additional weight incurred by the GTI-R, which may include fewer equipment, some structural lightening, use of lightweight materials. The GTI-R will be introduced in September of this year at the Frankfurt Motor Show and will hit showrooms this coming winter.
