Axon Automotive, a new UK carmaker, recently rolled out a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle that runs on full electric mode in the city and uses a petrol or bioethonol combustion engine for long journeys. Axon has achieved 50g/km in carbon emissions due to the use of lightweight materials and a slippery shape.
Axon‚ managing director, Dr Steve Cousins, said that emissions can be radically lowered by designing light cars and giving them good aerodynamics. Cousins said that the car has no limitation on range but the company can maximize the benefits of electrics without the cost and weight of large batteries. Inside, we find that the car uses recycled jeans for its seating and door panels made from recycled carbonfiber. The manufacturing roll-out will be done at small factories in UK and Ireland , and continental Europe including Spain , France , Denmark , and Holland . The first cars will be on sale in 2011 while full production is scheduled to begin in 2012.
