Bentley considering diesel engine

2011 Bentley Continental GT

The chairperson of Volkswagen, Martin Winterkorn, has provided the most decisive clue ever that Bentley is thinking about providing an option for diesel engines for some of its models. In a dialogue with Auto Motor und Sport of Germany this week, Winterkorn responded to inquiries about the state of Volkswagen's upper luxury brands, declaring that, "With Bentley we will react to the changing market conditions.I could well imagine a six-cylinder twin-turbocharged diesel in a Bentley."

The comments of Winterkorn contrast those of Bentley boss, Franz-Josef Paefgen, who lately informed reporters that Bentley was not going to bring in a diesel engine in any of their models.

The diesel engine pointed out by Winterkorn is a fresh twin-turbo 3.0-litre V6 common-rail version currently going through enhancement by Audi. Alleged to generate in excess of 300 hp and more than 440lb ft of torque, it should be revealed in the next generation A8 at the Frankfurt motor show next year.
