In 2012, a GT2 version of Bentley’s top-selling Continental will be launched, according to an Auto Express report. However, new chief Wolfgang Durheimer has yet to confirm if the GT2 will use the current W12 engine or the new twin-turbo V8 that’s due in 2012. At 2,200kg, this model is lighter than the standard GT by at least 200kg. It has an output of 650bhp, almost 100bhp more than the regular coupe. As a result, the vehicle can accelerate from a standstill to 60mph in less than four seconds. It can reach a top speed that exceeds 200mph.
It is believed that both engines are being tested as the two of them can deliver over 600bhp. Sources said that this limited edition would be the fastest and most powerful road car from Bentley. In addition, the sources said that the GT2 is the first Continental to get rid of the four-wheel-drive system.
Early this year, the car was introduced to the top officials at a secret meeting. Durheimer said that this car will help Bentley to raise the Continental lineup’s appeal and to boost the performance of the GT Supersport, its current flagship. He said that he is sure that there’s room for a car that offers more power than the Supersport. He also explained that the company may have made some errors in how the Supersport was designed in the past. For instance, he said that it shouldn’t have been a two-seater since this layout should be used only for the “top-line cars.”
