Bentley idles its Crewe factory for seven weeks

Bentley Continental GTC Speed

It was recently announced by Bentley its intentions for a seven-week shut down of its Crewe factory to avoid the build up of stocks. The factory, which builds both the Bentley Arnage and Continental versions, will temporarily cease its operations from the beginning of March up to the middle of April. Arnage will experience a six-week suspension while the Continental will have seven weeks.

This move, which will affect 3,600 Bentley personnel, will be spread over a period of time to permit the completion of cars already in the production process. Although Bentley enjoyed a record production year back in 2007 with 10,000 vehicles, it experienced a 24 percent decline in 2008 with only 7600 vehicles built.

Bentley Motors said that although there will be a shutdown workers wages will not be affected since they operate on a time-banking scheme where workers continue to get paid but must make up for time off later.
