During the Sir Henry Royce Memorial Foundation lecture on the 22nd of this month Bentley Motors will put on charts the progress of the Bentley V8 engine which is the most remarkable and enduring powerplants in the world. Launched 50 years ago in the legendary Bentley S2 Continental the Bentley V8 still powers the carmaker's most powerful, flagship luxury vehicles including the Bentely Brooklands coupe which comes with 530 hp, the Azure and the Arnage convertibles in 2009.
The Bentley V8 is a major example of how a well-designed original can endure and improve under the right guidance. The current engine, faithful to the original design, has increased its potency over 150 percent by way of the introduction of fuel injection, turbo charging and inter-cooling technologies while keeping in step with the most current emissions benchmarks.
The engine is hand-built at Bentley's headquarters, the 6.75-liter Bentely V8 that powers the Brooklands produces 1050 Nm/774lb-ft of torque at 3250 rpm enabling the vehicle to reach 60 mph from standstill in just 5 seconds with a maximum speed of 184 mph (296 km/h).
