Bill Ford Jr. confirms Ecoboost Mustang

Ford chairman Bill Ford Jr. confirmed that an Ecoboost engine will soon be offered in the Mustang. However, he didn’t disclose a timeline or engine specifications. Ford was recently a speaker at Princeton University where he was asked if an Ecoboost Mustang is possible. He confirmed that Ford’s pony car will get the turbocharged engine. Ford’s current Ecoboost 4-cylinder can deliver up to 247hp, while the 3.5L Ecoboost V6 can generate up to 365hp.
They don’t come up to what the larger V6 and V8 engines are capable of but fuel economy figures make up for the performance deficit. It is possible that either application will be available in the Mustang. A 4-cylinder Ecoboost would be a potent rival to smaller engined cars such as the Hyundai Genesis.
The Mustang V6 is now considered a legitimate performance car in its own right. Meanwhile, an Ecoboost V6 could bridge the gap between the regular V6 and the 5.0 V8. Jalopnik implied that the “SVO” trim, which featured a 2.3L turbo 4-cylinder in the 1980s, may come back but there isn’t much evidence to support the idea.
