Construction of a carbon fiber manufacturing plant in Moses Lake, Wash., started last Wednesday. The owner of this facility is SGL Automotive Carbon Fibers, a joint venture between BMW AG and SGL Group, which aims to produce the lightweight carbon fiber-reinforced plastic that will be used for the body of BMW's battery-powered Megacity Vehicle. This vehicle is expected to start selling in 2013. This technology will raise the fuel efficiency of the car since the use of carbon fiber will sidestep the extra 250 to 350 kilograms that burdens nearly all electric vehicles. Initially, BMW and SGL planned to invest $100 million to build the 60-acre plant. In the third quarter of 2011, one of the two carbon fiber lines will be commissioned. Each line will have an annual capacity of 1,500 metric tons. In a statement, Joerg Pohlman, managing director of SGL Automotive Carbon Fibers, remarked that Moses Lake is an ideal location due to its clean hydropower resources and competitive energy costs.
