The sales race between the top two luxury car manufacturers has never been closer. Lexus has been the frontrunner for the last nine years but due to the global economic downturn, BMW has closed the gap and if it continues its pace, it can actually overtake Lexus. As of August, BMW has sold 129,176 vehicles while Lexus has sold 131,469. Before the recession, Lexus was comfortably ahead with a sales record of more than 300,000 cars per year. Since the recession began, the market has shrunk and BMW has picked up a larger share in the luxury segment. BMW North America CEO Jim O'Donnell said that it is ready to take Lexus' coveted title and that it's "really breathing down Lexus' neck." Unfortunately for Lexus, it appears to be true as BMW was slightly ahead of Lexus through June, but the figures swung back in Lexus' favor in July.
