Bmw developing new hydrogen powerplant

A new hydrogen powerplant is being developed by BMW it says will be as efficient as the diesel currently available. Forschung und Tecnick division from the BMW Group is working in partnership with researchers at the Austrian Graz University of Technology, together with two other partners participating in the research, to design a new and more efficient hydrogen-powered powerplant.

This powerplant comes with a combination of spark-ignition and diesel combustion technology to better take advantage of the favorable burning characteristics of hydrogen. Included in the experimental system is the direct-injection technology, with HOERBIGER ValveTec GmbH, one of the partners, providing high-pressure injectors that can thrust the hydrogen into the chamber at pressures reaching 300 bar.

BMW claims that it can equal the combustion efficiency rating of 42 percent of modern turbo-diesels as well as generate power yield of 100 kilowatts (around 134hp) per liter of powerplant displacement and all of this while the engine is still in the research stage.
