Tom Baloga, BMW's top North American engineer, pointed to the four-cylinder as the best way to meet higher fuel economy standards without seriously affecting performance. In an interview with Bloomberg, Baloga confirmed that BMW is considering the switch but so far, concrete plans have not been announced. Competitor Mercedes-Benz has also been mulling whether to go four-cylinder for the US.

In fact at the New York Auto Show this year, Mercedes Benz displayed a four-cylinder diesel E250 BlueTEC Concept.

It seems likely that the US market will be seeing the birth of the BMW M brand four-cylinders. We're left to ponder when it will come and how it will take shape. Candidates for the four-cylinders include the 3-series, the 1-series, and even the X3.
