Most countries had reeled under the global industry downturn but not China. In fact, China had been a major bright spot to global carmakers as Beijing's stimulus measures boosted consumer confidence. Sales of BMW and Mini brands in China came to a record-breaking 90,536 units in 2009, up 36% from 65,822 units in 2008. On the other hand, its rival Daimler AG's Mercedes-Benz unit was able to sell 68,500 cars in China during the period, a 77% rise. In a statement, BMW said that in the Greater China area, including mainland China, Macau, Taiwan and Hong Kong, BMW sold 98,869 cars in 2009, up 31.2% from a year earlier. BMW operates a manufacturing venture with Brilliance China Automotive Holdings Ltd. in the northern Chinese city of Shenyang.
